3AM Dance Party: The Night I Finally Stopped Playing Perfect

3AM Dance Party: The Night I Finally Stopped Playing Perfect.

You know those moments that hit differently at 3AM?

Last Tuesday, I found myself standing in my kitchen, mascara smeared under my eyes, half-eaten pint of cookie dough ice cream in hand, wondering how I’d gotten there.

Spoiler alert: this isn’t your typical “rock bottom” story – it’s actually the moment everything changed.

Let me paint the scene!

I’d just wrapped up a massive client presentation (nailed it!), gotten the baby to bed after three stories and two glasses of water (the usual negotiation), and finally sat down to tackle that mountain of tasks for my side hustle that had been giving me the side-eye all day.

Perfect recipe for a midnight meltdown, right?

But here's where it gets interesting.

Instead of spiraling into my usual late-night stress session, I did something completely out of character.

I put on my favorite 90s playlist (hello, Spice Girls!), cranked it up just enough not to wake the tiny humans upstairs, or my husband, and started dancing.

Right there, between the dishwasher and the fridge.

And you know what? It felt absolutely ridiculous—and absolutely perfect.

Here's what my kitchen dance party taught me about living authentically.

As I was twirling around my kitchen (using a wooden spoon as a microphone, because why not?), it hit me: we’re all so caught up in this perfectly curated version of life that we forget to actually live it.

We’re busy posting our highlight reels on Instagram while missing the real highlights happening in our messy, beautiful everyday moments.

That night taught me something crucial about finding joy in the chaos.

It’s not about having it all together – it’s about embracing the moments when it’s all falling apart and finding the beauty in the mess.

Since that night, I’ve made some changes. I’ve started what I call my “Kitchen Dance Party Protocol” – whenever life feels too heavy, too serious, or too overwhelming.

I take a moment to just be ridiculous. Sometimes it’s a dance party, sometimes it’s making funny faces in the mirror while I’m getting ready for work.

And sometimes it’s just taking a deep breath and remembering that perfection is overrated.

5 Lessons I've learned in this process.

  • The best memories rarely make it to social media
  • Sometimes a good dance break beats a meditation app
  • Cookie dough ice cream tastes better straight from the container
  • Your kids’ breakfast plates make excellent impromptu dance floors for the moon walk (Don’t try this at home lol)
  • Joy doesn’t wait for perfect circumstances

My permision from me to you.

I know you’re trying to balance it all—the careers, side hustles, the families, the endless to-do lists—and I get how tiresome it can be because I’m living in it right now.

But maybe it’s time we all had our own kitchen dance party?

Turn up the music, let down your hair, and remember that sometimes the best versions of ourselves emerge when we stop trying so hard to be perfect.

Life’s too short for perfect anyway. It’s just right for authentic, messy, beautiful moments that remind us who we really are.
