Living paycheck to paycheck felt like a constant source of anxiety: worrying about bills, watching every penny, and feeling stuck.

But over time, I implemented simple, doable changes that transformed my financial stress into stability. Here’s how I shifted mindset, budget, and habits and found peace.

1. Evaluating My Spending & Creating a Doable Budget

I started by reviewing every expense—essentials, wants, and non‑essentials. Then I crafted a monthly budget that prioritized bills, groceries, savings, and small treats. The key was realism: I built a lifestyle I could maintain, not cut so tight it felt punitive.

Recurring expenses were scheduled around each payday to avoid cash gaps and late fees. This alignment alone eased a lot of my stress and helped me feel in control.

2. Canceled Unused Subscriptions & Using Free Community Resources

I canceled cable and streaming apps I rarely used for my kids, relying solely on Amazon Prime for movies and shows. Instead of paying for extras, we began going to our local library for books, story times, and even free passes to parks and children’s events.

We started free family “no‑spend” days: exploring parks, community events, or simply playing at home. This saved money and created a focus on joyful memories without cost.

3. Renegotiating Debt & Medical Bills

I reviewed my debts and medical bills carefully. For one medical bill, I requested an itemized copy and contacted hospital billing. I asked for their hardship payer department, shared my situation, and negotiated a 35% reduction plus a zero-interest, extended payment plan with a smaller monthly minimum.

I did the same with credit cards, asking for lower interest rates. A single phone call made a noticeable impact on my monthly payments and mental load.

All the major credit card companies I had a card with agreed, resulting in a 3-5% interest rate reduction for each car. Only one card was refused, and that was a store card.

4. Changing Grocery Habits & Shopping Smarter

I switched where I shopped for groceries—looking for sales, using discounts, and sticking to a pre-written list. Purchasing only what was needed reduced impulse buys and boosted meal planning success. Meal prepping saved both time and cash.

Three Side Hustles that Helped the Most

Once I stabilized the basics, I launched flexible side hustles suited to my skills and schedule:

Mobile Notary

Becoming a notary allowed me to earn clients on demand. Some services pay around $30 per signature, and others pay 75 to 100+; skilled notaries can make hundreds in a day.

I personally made 900-1400 each month working after my work hours on the weekend. It’s flexible and ideally suited for busy moms. One man made $900 in a day being a  mobile Notary

Handmade Skincare Products

I began making and selling sugar scrubs, body butters, and skincare items using clean, simple recipes. Selling locally and online brought incremental income and a creative outlet.

I paid for a course that cost $997 to learn how to create these products and start a business from it and earned over $11,000 in a year in profits.

Digital Product Sales

Creating digital files in 2023 I started creating digital products—from planners to printable worksheets—that turned into passive income. I used simple tools and platforms like Etsy and later on Beacons.Ai (www.ramatullen.com) and my own website, www.digitalplrmom.com.
