Girl, let’s talk about the B-word. No, not that one – BUDGET!
If you just rolled your eyes or felt your stomach drop, you’re not alone. Most of us hear “budget” and immediately think of eating ramen noodles for a month while watching Netflix on our neighbor’s account.
But here’s the truth: budgeting doesn’t mean kissing your latte goodbye forever. It’s actually your ticket to financial freedom and peace of mind.
Why Your Budget Keeps Failing (And It’s Not Your Fault!)
Let’s be real, you’ve probably tried budgeting before. Maybe you downloaded that fancy app, color-coded your expenses, and felt like a financial guru for exactly… three days?
Then life happened, you overspent on groceries, and suddenly you were back to winging it with your money.
Here’s the thing: most budgets fail because they’re not realistic. You can’t go from spending $200 a month on dining out to $20 overnight. That’s like going from couch potato to marathon runner in a week, it’s just not happening, sister.
The Reality Check That Changed Everything For Me.
Before you can fix your budget, you need to know where your money is actually going. And fair warning: this might be scarier than your high school yearbook photos.
Your 30-Day Money Detective Challenge:
For one month (yes, a whole month), track every single penny you spend. We’re talking:
- That $5 coffee on Tuesday
- The impulse buy mascara at Target
- The subscription you forgot you had
- Everything!
Keep all your receipts like you’re preparing for an audit. Write it all down or use an app, whatever works for you. At the end of 30 days, you’ll probably be shocked.
Most people discover they’re spending way more than they thought, especially on those “little” purchases that add up faster than likes on a cute puppy video.
The “Oh My Gosh, Where Did My Money Go?” Moment
Don’t panic when you see the numbers. Everyone has that moment of sticker shock. The good news? Now you have real data to work with instead of guessing. Knowledge is power, and you’re about to become the CEO of your own finances.
Smart Ways to Trim the Fat (Without Feeling Deprived)
Once you know where your money goes, you can start making smarter choices. Here are some painless ways to cut costs:
Easy Money-Saving Wins:
- Temperature hack: Adjust your thermostat by just 2-3 degrees. Your wallet will thank you, and you probably won’t even notice.
- Coffee shop substitute: Make your fancy drinks at home. Yes, it takes an extra 5 minutes, but that’s $100+ back in your pocket each month.
- The great phone plan audit: When’s the last time you checked if you’re getting the best deal? Probably never, right?
- Sale shopping only: Buy groceries during sales and stock up on things you actually use.
- Grocery Hack: Make a list of all the food you currently have, go to ChatGPT, and enter the list, and ask ChatGPTto make a meal plan for a week based on your list. Listen, chat, GT will come up with some of the best combinations and meals you have ever tasted. We still have some of the meal, and we absolutely recycle each month. If you do this twice a month, you could save hundreds on groceries and meal planning.
Remember, you don’t need the latest everything. Ask yourself, “Do I actually need this, or do I just want it because Instagram told me to?”
The Simple Budget That Actually Works
Forget complicated spreadsheets with 47 categories. Let’s keep it simple with the 60% solution:
(I use for every beginner getting started wit budgeting)
Here’s your new budget breakdown:
- 60% for expenses (rent, groceries, utilities: the necessary stuff)
- Up to 10% for retirement If your job offers a 401(k), take advantage of their matching program if they offer one. Let’s say your job offer is a 4% dollar-for-dollar match; then match up to 4% and you’ll be saving 8% for retirement. even below the 10% recommendation. (Invest more if you’re not in debt.)
- 10% for debt: Paying off credit cards, personal loans, etc…
- 10% for short-term savings (car repairs, emergency fund, sinking fund—planning a vacation, gifts or getting a new car?.
- 10% for fun money: guilt-free spending on whatever makes you happy!
This isn’t just a budget; it’s a lifestyle that lets you live for today while securing your tomorrow.
Making It Automatic (Because Who Has Time?)
Set up these money moves once and forget about them:
- Automate bill payments (no more late fees!)
- Set up automatic transfers to savings
- Keep your fun money in cash (watching it disappear makes you more mindful)
The less you have to think about routine money stuff, the more mental energy you have for the important decisions.
What Happens When You Blow Your budget (Because You Will, and That’s Okay!)
Let’s get one thing straight: you’re going to blow your budget sometimes. It happens to everyone, even financial experts. The key is getting back on track quickly instead of throwing in the towel.
Quick budget recovery moves:
- Check if your budget is realistic: Maybe you were too aggressive with your spending limits
- Shift money between categories: Overspent on clothes? Cut back on dining out this month
- Ask for help early: Call your creditors if you’re behind. They’d rather work with you than chase you
- Adjust as needed: If you’re consistently overspending in one area, your budget needs a reality check
- Increase your income: If you’re consistently blowing your budget, it may be time to increase your income. Sometimes cutting here and there is not enough.
Do a skill and time audit, and start offering your expertise for extra income.
Digital products are the easiest way to create extra income and what has helped me over the years while working full time and managing a household with two teenagers and a baby plus a husband.
You don’t need to leave your home to make an extra 500 or more a month. And sometimes that’s all you need—an extra $250, $500, or $750 to give you a little breathing room at the end of your budget.
For me it was $580, exactly what I needed. I ended up making a consistent $1200 to $1400, which helped me more than I needed and allowed me to give generously and pay for my cosmetic surgery that would have taken me 5 years to save for but that I was able to pay for in just 10 months.
